The iPhone 17 Pro Max Review:
Is the return to aluminum and the “All-48MP” camera system enough to justify the upgrade?
The initial hype cycle is over, the “new phone smell” has faded, and we’ve had enough time to live with the device to answer the big question: Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max actually worth it?
This year, Apple made some confusing choices (RIP Titanium?) and some brilliant ones (finally, that Telephoto lens!). Here is my deep dive into the good, the bad, and the 3,000-nit reality of the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
1. The Design: A Shocking Return to Aluminum
When Apple introduced Titanium on the iPhone 15 Pro, we thought it was here to stay. Yet, with the 17 Pro Max, Apple has pivoted back to a specialized Aluminum Unibody design.
Why? Thermal management.
The new “Thermal Plateau” design (that raised camera island) isn’t just for looks; it’s a heat sink. The A19 Pro chip runs hot when pushing local AI tasks, and aluminum dissipates that heat far better than titanium ever could.
-
The Feel: It feels strangely nostalgic—reminiscent of the iPhone 6 era but denser and more premium.
-
The Colors: The new Cosmic Orange is the standout this year. It shifts from a deep amber to a bright copper depending on the light.
2. The “Holy Trinity” of Cameras
For photographers, this is the year we’ve been waiting for. For the first time, we have triple 48MP sensors on the rear.
-
Main: Standard excellence, but with faster shutter speeds.
-
Ultrawide: Carried over from the 16 Pro, still great for macros.
-
The Star—48MP Telephoto: This is the game changer. Previous Pro Max models had a 12MP telephoto sensor that fell apart if you cropped in. The 17 Pro Max’s 48MP 5x zoom allows for a “lossless” crop at 10x. The detail in distant shots is startlingly good.
The Selfie Curveball:
Rumors predicted a 24MP front camera, but Apple gave us an 18MP “Center Stage” sensor instead. It uses a square sensor format to automatically crop and pan within the selfie frame to keep you centered, even for still photos. It’s clever, but I admit I miss the raw resolution count of the rumored 24MP.
3. Display: Brighter Than the Sun
The 6.9-inch panel is massive. If you have small hands, the “iPhone Air” might be a better fit for you. However, the upgrade to 3,000 nits peak brightness is noticeable. I used this phone in direct Kenyan sunlight at noon, and the screen looked like a printed sticker—zero squinting required.
4. Performance: A19 Pro & The RAM Boost
We finally got it: 12GB of RAM.
While the A19 Pro chip is fast (Geekbench scores are up ~20%), the RAM is the real hero.
-
Why it matters: Apple Intelligence.
-
Previous iPhones would occasionally “dump” background apps to free up memory for AI tasks. The 17 Pro Max keeps everything open. You can edit a 4K video, switch to generate an image in the Image Playground, and switch back without a reload.
5. The Verdict: Should You Upgrade?
Buy it if:
-
You are on an iPhone 14 Pro or older. The jump in screen brightness, USB-C utility, and the triple 48MP camera system will feel like a generational leap.
-
You are a mobile photographer. The 48MP Telephoto lens alone is worth the price of admission for concert-goers and travelers.
Skip it if:
-
You have an iPhone 16 Pro Max. The A19 chip is better, but not “sell your current phone” better. Unless you really need that thermal performance for gaming, your 16 Pro Max is still a beast.
-
You hate large phones. The 6.9-inch size is pushing the limit of human ergonomics. Seriously, go hold one in the store first.
